Warning: The following challenges one of our deepest held paradigms—our view of humanity’s future and place in evolution. As a human being with an investment in the future of our species, you may find yourself profoundly disturbed and resisting its conclusions.
That humanity and the planet are in crisis is clear to just about everyone. Moreover, the severity of the crisis is now beginning to hit home. Recent reports suggest we are in the early stages of the sixth major mass extinction in Earth’s history—this time caused by one of the planet’s own species rather than an asteroid or comet impact—and if we do not change our ways radically and very fast, then we, along with many other species, will become extinct in a century or so. And it is our own fault.
At least that is the story we are told. Here I propose a new story of human evolution—not the sort of new story that many people are calling for in which the transformation of human beings and society allows us to avoid immanent extinction and move on into a sustainable long-term future. In this radically different new story, there is no long-term stable future ahead of us. We are coming to the natural end of our evolutionary journey, spiraling faster and faster into an evolutionary singularity. And there is no blame for this. Nowhere did we go wrong. It is the inevitable fate of any intelligent technologically-empowered species.
The real roots of our ever-deepening crisis lie not in human behavior, but in the acceleration of evolution. This acceleration is inevitable. Positive feedback processes in any evolutionary process lead to a steady increase in the rate of change. Each new development lays foundations for future development. We can see this in the history of life on Earth—the development of nucleated cells, multi-cellular organisms, sexual reproduction, each pushed the rate of evolution ahead. Today we can see the same pattern in human development as we moved from hunting, to agriculture, to civilization, to industry, and now to information technologies. The pace of change is winding up faster and faster. However fast we find the pace of life today, one thing is sure, twenty years from now it is going to be much faster, and twenty years after that much faster still, and twenty years after that… almost unimaginable.

Everything Mr. Russell says is true and yet, I do not accept that the divine intelligence that has taken this grand experiment in consciousness billions of years to evolve to the point where it is just beginning to become aware of itself as divine, is suddenly going to terminate the human body on earth by the next century! No matter how logical that may seem at the moment, no matter what the preponderance of “evidence,” my own experience as a spiritual emergency survivor contradicts this conclusion.
The very acceleration Mr. Russell is talking about has “intention” written all over it. Whatever we can call “it”, this intention can up-end the most forgone conclusion and create something totally outside the box. Very little in what I’ve read in the visions of others, in the many near-death experiences I’ve studied and certainly nothing I’ve seen in my own journeys suggest that mankind will not ultimately survive. Quite the opposite.
I’m not saying there won’t be a great cleansing or a great correction or that the human collective won’t be within an inch of its life trying to survive the storm. I’m not even saying most of us or most of life on earth, will survive.
I’m saying that there is a divine intelligence at work that is relentlessly turning our attention towards ITSELF, impelling us to the awareness that we are THAT, and that there is a growing “great awakening” to the fact of the unity of all life and our own divine nature as love. And although we are currently in a collective shamanic decent into our own underworld, where our old collective self IS in fact dying and being deconstructed, this is not the end. Emphatically not!
Shamanically, there has to be a reconstruction, a rebirth, a re-fashioning. The phoenix has to rise up again. In the heroic archetype, there has to be a return. The hero has to emerge from his or her own death with new gifts. Essentially, there has to be a resurrection after the crucifixion.
That means there’s a kind of magic we scarcely believe can even exist. I wouldn’t even imagine this kind of magic if I hadn’t survived my own ordeal. So to me, it means that a collective awakening to the reality of the divine love that is in us and that informs the entire universe can change everything beyond what is logically possible. It is like the way people who have “died” from terminal cancer like Anita Moorjani and Mellon Thomas Benedict have returned to their bodies completely healed! It’s impossible yet it happened.
From what I’ve seen, we are heading into the dawn of a new era on earth. Instead of trying to transcend life on earth and go to heaven, the species will be witness to a whole new paradigm in which we are active co-creators in returning heaven to earth.
In a word, God, in-formed as us, is finally coming home to his/her own creation.
Humanity has never moved as a single body, there’s no reason to assume it suddenly will now. Many levels of development and awareness are present at the same time. Expect more of everything, from the sublime to the demonic, until this historical epoch has run its course. I claim no foreknowledge of our ultimate evolutionary path, but the near and foreseeable future will clearly be a mess. As individuals, we can always open our hearts.
